Teen Driver Arrested after Fatal Hit-and-Run in Orlando

A teen driver was arrested on July 3 in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in Orlando on July 1, according to a report on wftv.com.

The car accident occurred when the teen backed his Nissan Pathfinder SUV into a disabled car, pushing the disabled vehicle back into its driver and crushing him between his own vehicle and a stopped Chevy Malibu, which belonged to a motorist who had stopped to offer help after seeing the disabled car on the side of the road.

After the tragic accident, the teen driver drove the SUV away from the scene, according to the wftv.com com report.

In Car Accidents, Teen Drivers May Pose a Higher Risk to Others

In a recent post to the blog, we discussed a report by the American Automobile Association that demonstrated that in car accidents involving teen drivers, people other than teens were more likely to be injured or killed in car accidents that involved a teen drivers.

If you are the parent of a teen driver, it is important to stress safe driving habits during this time of the year, part of what AAA refers to as the 100 Deadliest Days—a time when more drivers, especially teens on summer break, are out on the roads.

If the worst happens and your teen is involved in a car accident, he or she should never leave the scene without stopping to render aid. A car accident that turns to a hit-and-run will carry much graver consequences.

How Florida Law has Gotten Tougher on Hit-and-Run Drivers

In 2014, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed an act into law that increased the penalty for leaving the scene of crash that caused injuries from a 3rd degree to a 2nd degree felony. The law also imposed a mandatory minimum of four years for a driver who fled a crash that resulted in a fatality.

Teach your teen driver how to be safe behind the wheel and respect the laws governing car accidents.
