Do Tire Blowouts Cause Fatal Accidents?

According to the Orlando Sentinel, on May 12, a 46-year-old Tamarac man died after the van he was driving experienced a tire blowout, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

The newspaper reported that the crash occurred at about 7:15 a.m. on the northbound lane of Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County. The victim was reportedly driving a 2003 Chevrolet van when the tire’s tread separated. The van then went off the road and overturned. The victim was allegedly thrown from the vehicle.

A passenger in the vehicle also sustained serious injuries and had to be transported to an area hospital. The accident remains under investigation.

An Attorney Can Help You with a Defective Product Claim

Sadly, tire blowouts are not uncommon. Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that more than 400 people are killed in car accidents involving tire blowouts, as there are more than 78,000 incidents reported.

Sometimes, these accidents are preventable, as drivers fail to regularly check tires for inflation and worn treads, but sometimes there are items in the road that can cause blowouts or defects with tire designs, which can lead to accidents.

If you are ever injured in a vehicle accident and you think that it may have occurred due to a defective auto part, speak to an attorney. You may be able to seek damages for your injuries—this can be especially beneficial if you required long-term medical care, which can be incredibly expensive.

An attorney can investigate your accident and determine if a tire suffered from design defects or if it malfunctioned. Auto part manufacturers have a duty to make sure that their products are safe so that they do not harm consumers.
