Daycare Center Reopens After Deadly Crash

June 23, 2014

According to the Orlando Sentinel, a daycare center in Orange County reopened on June 2 after having to repair structural damage from a vehicle that crashed into their building two months ago. That vehicle injured a dozen children and killed a four-year-old girl.

On April 9, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into the back of a Toyota Solara. The impact sent the Solara crashing into The KinderCare center on Golden Road.

The driver of the SUV, a Dodge Durango, fled the scene. State Troopers later found the Durango. Inside of the vehicle, there was cocaine, heroin, marijuana, thousands of dollars in cash and a scale.

The Orlando Sentinel says that the driver of the SUV, 38-year-old Robert Corchado, has been charged with:

  • Trafficking in heroin
  • Possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Leaving the scene of an accident with injuries

Should Daycare Centers Be Built to Prevent Impacts from Vehicles?

According to Colleen Moran, a spokesperson for Knowledge Universe, the parent company of KinderCare, the building was reconstructed with more safety features to prevent another catastrophic accident.

She said the building now has reinforced planters made out of concrete in the front. Along the side of KinderCare, construction crews installed traffic barriers.

Additionally, construction crews worked to create a familiar and comfortable environment for the kids.

During the first week, previously enrolled children will return to KinderCare. In the following week, it will welcome new families.
