Are There More Car Accidents on Thanksgiving Eve?

November 26, 2014

If you are going out tonight to celebrate Thanksgiving, make sure you have a designated driver. The decision to drink and drive could very well lead to your death or the death of other people on the road.

Last year, USA Today had an interesting article about Thanksgiving eve vehicle accidents, saying numbers tend to spike.

The paper used data provided by car insurance companies and discovered that between the hours of 8 p.m. and 3 a.m., there was a 24 percent increase in vehicle accidents involving parking or rear-end crashes, a 17 percent increase in general collisions and a 14 percent increase in claims involving buildings or private property.

USA Today speculated that the rise in accidents could be the result of drunk driving and poor weather, as well as more people traveling on roadways.

“Black Wednesday isn’t a day that pops up on most people’s radar, but the mixture of relatives in town, students home from school and no work the following day makes for a busy day on the roads,” said Tricia Griffith, claims group president at Progressive, in a statement, according to USA Today.

What Should I Do If a Drunk Driver Hits Me?

Remember, negligent drivers cause many car accidents. You should avoid issues like drunk driving by having a sober ride or designated driver. Additionally, in many cities, there are public transportation options available to people who drink.

In addition to avoiding drunk driving, you should avoid distracted driving and other forms of recklessness that could contribute to an accident. Keep in mind, in addition to criminal charges, a person who causes an accident because of reckless driving can be held civilly liable.

Contact our office today for more information. We hold negligent drivers liable for any injuries or deaths they cause. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
