How Can I Avoid a Holiday Drunk Driving Accident?

If you are planning to throw holiday parties over the upcoming week, make sure that you have transportation options available to drivers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk driving accidents and deaths rise during holiday periods. With this in mind, December has been designated National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

Remember, if you serve alcohol at a party and someone is injured or killed because of an accident, you can be held liable. Additionally, if you plan to attend a party, you should avoid issues like drunk driving by having a sober ride or designated driver.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving has put out some safety tips for people hosting holiday parties. Among the tips:

  • Plan activities like party games or door prize drawings that do not involve alcohol and engage people, resulting in a lower consumption of alcohol.
  • Provide plenty of food to keep your guests from drinking on an empty stomach.
  • Avoid too many salty snacks, which tend to make people thirsty and drink more.
  • Offer non-alcoholic beverages for non-drinking designated drivers and others who prefer not to drink alcohol.
  • Never serve alcohol to someone under 21 and never ask anyone under 21 to serve alcohol at parties.
  • Have the number of a taxi service or a rideshare app on hand or offer your sofa to guests who need to stay put.
