Back on the Horse: Tracy Morgan’s Recovery After TBI

A little more than a year has passed since Tracy Morgan’s tragic accident that claimed the life of his friend and mentor, James McNair. On June 7th of last year, a Walmart truck slammed into the rear of Morgan’s limousine, killing McNair and injuring Morgan and two other passengers. Morgan suffered several injuries including broken ribs, a broken leg and a traumatic brain injury. He was in a coma for two weeks before waking up to the news that he had been in a car accident and his friend did not make it.

“Bones heal, but the loss of my friend will never heal,” Morgan told Matt Lauer in his first interview following the crash. Last month, Walmart agreed on a settlement for the lawsuit that Morgan filed against them. The suit alleged that the driver of the truck that hit them had not slept in more than 24 hours and was driving 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. Morgan stated that although the suit “was never easy,” he was relieved that “Walmart stepped up to the plate in a tremendous way. They took full responsibility.”

Speaking about his health and brain injury, Morgan told Lauer that “there are times where I have my good days and my bad days, where I forget things. There are times where I get headaches, and the nose bleeds. I won’t even let my lady know because I don’t want her to worry about it.”

Despite everything, Morgan has said that he is anxious to get back to work and is even scheduled to host SNL in October. He was a regular player at Saturday Night Live for seven years, making it the perfect venue for him to return to the comedy scene. “I’ll get back to making you laugh,” he promised.
