Is Drunk Driving an Issue in Florida?

Sadly, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in 2014, there were 676 fatal drunk driving accidents in Florida, representing 28.1 percent of all traffic deaths. Additionally, there were 40,677 driving under the influence of alcohol arrests made. These numbers are unacceptable, as drunk driving is completely avoidable.

A Tragic Orange County Drunk Driving Accident

Unfortunately, according to the Orlando Sentinel, a man was killed on January 11 after a woman driving a black BMW hit the back of his Toyota, causing him to crash into a wall on Winter Garden Vineland Road near Lake Buena Vista.

State troopers told the newspaper that the woman operating the BMW did not stay at the crash scene. However, she was later found, with two other passengers in her vehicle, at which time it was discovered she was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The woman, Gina Estrada, 30, of New York, was reportedly charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injury or death and DUI manslaughter.
