14,000 New TBI Victims in Palm Beach Each Year

March 25, 2015

The Brain Injury Association of Florida reports that Palm Beach County sees approximately 14,000 traumatic brain injuries (TBI) every year. The results exclude strokes, brain tumors and similar health-related factors. The TBI victims in this story suffered their injuries from auto wrecks, bicycle and motorcycle crashes, boating wrecks and other similar accidental causes, as well as from assaults and playing sports.

TBI Statistical Breakdown by Cause of Injury

If these 14,000 TBIs hold with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics for the entire country, then the majority of these cases could involve a civil lawsuit.

The CDC reports that the leading causes of TBIs are:

  • 35 percent falls

Premise liability cases and lawsuits involving nursing homes will see a sizable amount of falls, either from slips, trips or a lack of handicap ramps or rails. Additionally, children can receive TBIs from falls at playgrounds and theme parks. Falls result in about 600,000 TBIs across the country each year.

  • 17 percent traffic incidents

Auto accidents, especially speed-related car crashes, head-on collisions and helmetless motorcycle or bicycle accidents are a major source of TBIs involving traffic incidents. Traffic accidents result in about 300,000 annual TBI incidences. Although, less numerable than falls, auto wrecks are the leading cause of TBI deaths.

  • 16.5 percent struck by or against an object

These are common to premises liability cases, as well as for workplace injury claims. This is the second leading cause for TBIs in children and infants. Young children are often not aware of their surroundings in a way that adults are. For adults, objects falling and striking someone in a warehouse or store is an all-too-common form of TBI.
